How to Start Fishing: Your First Three Steps

Start with a simple freshwater setup and practice these three skills before adding more gear.

1. Match your rod, reel and line. A spinning rod and reel is a practical starting point. Check the line rating printed on the rod and reel, and practice short casts in an open area before fishing.
2. Learn one dependable knot. Practice a Palomar knot with suitable line and a hook or lure that fits through the loop. Wet the knot before tightening, pull it snug and check that it holds before casting.
3. Keep your first rig simple. For freshwater panfish, start with a small hook, a worm and a bobber. Adjust the bobber so the bait sits above the bottom, and change depth if you are not getting bites. Check local fishing rules before choosing bait and keeping fish.
